How To Choose A Family Pet

If everyone appears comfortable with all that is involved in caring for a pet, it is time to go find the one that blends with your family. One of the more favored places to find the right pet is to go to the local animal shelter where you will find many small animals waiting for just the right family.

Most individuals do not take the time to evaluate which animal will be the right one for their family and often times go home with a new pet that does not have the room required to get proper exercise and rest.

Before leaving your home, decide if your new pet will be a cat or a dog. A cat will fit most anywhere, but if choosing a dog, know how large you wish it to be before entering the shelter. Do not put yourself in the position to fall in love with more then you can provide for by not being prepared for all the breeds available. A large dog needs a larger home and requires longer walks. Small pets also need exercise, but require less room to exercise, and often do just fine right within the home.  Can you get out for long walks or will there be times home is the exercise room.  In this case, a smaller pet is going to be the best one for you.

There is always going to be several animals you fall in love with, but not all will be a good match to your family. Most animal handlers will tell you that most often a pet will come to you and not want to leave your side when the connection is right. Sit down at their level and allow them to come to you.  Once they do, give them some loving, then get up, and see if they follow.  Do not be surprised if a gentle ‘come on’, is all it takes for that puppy dog to head straight for the passengers seat of his new family car!

As a courtesy reminder from other pet enthusiasts such as the equestrian groups, remember to groom your pet daily and keep their bedding and food dishes sanitized.
