RC Planes and RC Cars Can Be A Rewarding Hobby
Wikipedia defines “hobby” thusly: “A hobby is an activity or interest that is undertaken for pleasure or relaxation, often in one’s spare time. I personally think a hobby is a great thing for a child to have. It encourages research, as well as creativity. It is a very healthy way for one to spend his or her time.
“As your youngsters get older, they may gain a deeper interest in many activities, some of them not at all what you might wish for them to have. A hobby might help to deter them from the less than desirable activities.
A great hobby that can be both educational and worthwhile is that of remote controlled planes or the RC cars and RC submarines. As they get older, they may very well become interested in the more complex issues of remote controll. This can manifest itself in a more technical area or a higher level of RC cars or planes. The follow-on from the “toy grade” is that of the “hobby grade” car. These cars feature actual engines that are fueled by a combination of gasoline and oil or, if you actually take a bigger leap, nitro methane, methanol and oil. The “Nitro” cars are usually larger than their electrical counterparts and have some real engineering innovations. Everything from the body work to the engine or the suspension and wheels which will be more finely tuned or fully switched out for higher running gear.
These cars feature high powered radio frequencies with enough power to maintain control at a greated distance. It should also be noted that these cars are designed with an older audience in mind mainly because of the speed they will attain. A number of these nitro cars have been known to reach speeds of up to one hundred mph. The gas powered cars also come in several varieties such as street and dirt. Dirt cars are significantly different from the road cars in that they need a good bit of suspension travel due to the terrain they cover and often look like dune buggies with large rear wings. The street cars look more like their actual real-life counterparts and don’t feature knobby tires either.
If you are going to be involved in this hobby with your youngster, be sure that they grasp the idea that this can be a hobby that will take time and ability to get the maximum level of pleasure from. They probably will find it necessary to learn how to repair crash damage to the components of their RC plane or RC car and will have to take a lot better care of all the components and tools of a gas powered car vs. an electric one. The RC vehicles are almost out of the toy class and are actual machines and need to be treated as such.
If you get to the point where you do offer your son or daughter an RC car on at least just one occasion in their life. If they learn to love it, they may wind up getting interested in an exceedingly rewarding activity that can keep them occupied and having fun at the identical time as well as serve as a lifetime interest.
Depending on your child’s age, you’ll have to make your mind up which type of vehicle is best for them. Whatever you go with, it will all be worthwhile when you see their face light up the first time they get their hands on it.
You will find clubs in the larger communities that gladly offer guidance and advice in the pursuit of this hobby. These clubs schedule events and fly-in events for its members and for the public. My son is over 40 and he is still building RC planes from kits. He belongs to a club and in fact introduced me to this past-time when he gave me an indoor RC helicopter. It can be a source of real fun and comradeship for the family.
